Nudistams Draugiška Lietuva: Lithuania's Nudist Beaches
www.TrueLithuania.com says “Being naked/topless is only common in nudist beaches/saunas, many of which are gender-segregated."
True, but it’s also true, at least according to my late parents, reflecting on what was common in Lithuania a hundred years ago, that it was typical to enjoy all Lithuania’s beaches without bathing suits. In fact, in 1924 Druskininkai’s K. Dineika Wellness Park, open since the end of the 19th century, became just the second nudist park in all of Europe. People exercised there without clothes to become healthier in the sun and wind. Reportedly, three thousand people visited every day. Today, the park (illustrated above) has been recreated, but not as a nudist resort.
While there are no "official" nudist beaches in Lithuania today, there are quite a few places where "clothes optional" recreation is discretely tolerated: when you see signs that say “Tik moterims!/Women Only!” or “Tik vyrams!/Men Only!,” you’ve arrived at the nudist sections. Here's a sampling of places in Lithuania where "Naturists" gather (thanks, in large measure, to www.sandee.com) starting with three of the most well-known beaches:
Nidos nudistų paplūdimys/Nida Nudist Beach: a picturesque and secluded coastal haven in Neringa, the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The beach's soft, golden sand, presents a warm and inviting atmosphere, offering essential amenities to ensure a comfortable and safe beach experience. Lifeguards are on duty to oversee the swimming area. Bathroom facilities are provided and dogs are allowed on the beach. Nida Nudist Beach provides parking facilities for a reasonable fee, allowing easy access to the beach and surrounding attractions.
Girulių nudistų paplūdimys/Giruliai Nudist Beach, in Klaipėda, is a popular destination. Trained lifeguards are typically on duty during peak hours, providing safety and supervision for swimmers and beachgoers. Convenient bathroom facilities are available nearby and dogs are allowed on the beach. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent, and paid parking is available at designated parking areas.
Šventosios nudistų paplūdimys/Šventoji Nudist Beach, in the charming town of Sventoji, is a picturesque coastal gem located just a few kilometers north of Palanga. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months, visitors can access public bathrooms and showers, and dogs are allowed. Several parking areas are nearby, some paid during peak season, and others free. Šventoji is renowned for its wooden sculptures, created by local artists, and some can be found along the beach.
Pervalkos nudistų paplūdimys/Pervalka Nudist Beach in Neringa, the Curonian Spit, is a picturesque and tranquil beach. The sand here is soft and golden, and trained lifeguards are typically on duty during peak hours. There are bathroom facilities near the beach for added convenience. The beach is pet-friendly, allowing dogs to roam and play. Designated parking areas, usually paid, are located nearby.
Akmenos ežero nudistų paplūdimys/Akmena Lake Nudist Beach is a unique and secluded beach inside Trakai Historical National Park. Off serene Akmena Lake, this beach offers a serene and natural setting for visitors to relax and unwind. The sand color is natural and may vary depending on the weather and lake conditions, offering a soft and natural feel underfoot. It has few amenities as it caters specifically to nudist enthusiasts seeking a more natural and unencumbered beach experience. While there may not be lifeguards on duty, the lake is generally calm and suitable for swimming. Bring your own beach essentials, including towels, umbrellas, and, of course, sunscreen. Visitors can enjoy beautiful lake views and take leisurely walks along the shoreline.
